The Artist Behind the Work
Johnny Bray’s work is deeply influenced by his connection to nature and the landscapes of Nova Scotia. From an early age, he spent much of his time outdoors—wandering through the woods, exploring the coastline, and hiking in the mountains. Growing up surrounded by Nova Scotia’s rugged beauty gave him a lasting appreciation for the land and sea. The textures, colours, and rhythms of these places continue to shape both the way he sees the world and the art he creates.
Johnny earned a degree in History from Saint Mary’s University, an experience that further developed his interest in the relationship between people and the places they inhabit. His travels to different countries, adventurous pursuits, and experiences in nature have also helped shape an artistic style that brings together observation, memory, and emotion.
His development as a painter has been greatly influenced by professional artist Tim McGuire of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, who taught Johnny oil painting. Beyond technique, this mentorship encouraged him to discover his own sources of inspiration and to find joy in the creative process.
Working through painting and sculpture, Johnny seeks to capture more than simply the appearance of a landscape or place. His work is about the feeling of being there—the atmosphere, emotion, and sense of connection that can often be difficult to put into words. Creating art has become a way for him to remain connected to the natural and human landscapes that continue to inspire him.
At the heart of Johnny’s work is the belief that a strong connection to place can enrich our lives. His pieces reflect the places he has experienced while inviting others to slow down, look a little closer, and notice the quiet beauty that can easily be overlooked in everyday surroundings.
His work offers a perspective that is distinctly personal while remaining relatable to others—deeply rooted in Nova Scotia, yet inspired by a much wider world.
